Keep Her Confident: A Summer of Soccer, Stories, and Empowering Girls

This week’s blog post is a little different from what I normally write about. With the nice summer weather heating up and more time being spent outside, I find myself leaning into the simple joys like reading and staying active. But there’s something special about this summer season that naturally is pulling me to be active whether it’s playing sports or soaking up some sun with a story in hand.

This summer feels extra special because Canada is one of the hosts for the FIFA World Cup. As both a bookworm and soccer fan, that combination makes this summer feel more epic. It’s not just about watching the games and cheering for your favourite teams (Go Canada! Go Portugal!), but it’s the energy, community and global celebration that unites thousands.

One campaign that recently caught my attention and really resonated with me is the Dove “Keep her Confident” initiative, launched alongside the World Cup. Its message of encouragement to girls to show up, be bold, not just in sports but in everyday life, struck a chord. The positive message, which encourages girls not to hesitate, take up space and believe in themselves, is AMAZING. As an aunt, this message hit home in a personal way. I think a lot about the world my niece is growing up in and I want her to be able to feel supported in whatever she chooses.

That’s why campaigns like “KeepHerConfident” resonate beyond the advertising platform. They become a cultural shift and movement that I can get behind.

As someone who enjoys both reading and soccer, I love it when those two worlds overlap to do something great! Stories build imagination and sports build resilience. Together they can make someone confident!

This summer, I look forward to watching the games, playing outside, reading more books and creating moments that inspire the “KeepHerConfident” campaign as a positive role model for my niece.
