Bookish Self-Care for Readers

When you’re in a reading slump, self-care and books may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But let me introduce you to bookish self-care, which is a simple way to help bring back your love of reading.

When we think of self-care, we think of places, environments and activities that help us feel calm and peaceful. Now, apply that same logic to reading.

Create a Cozy Space

The first step to bookish self-care is creating a cozy reading space that suits your vibe. No matter your vibe, there is a cozy space for everyone! The goal of creating a cozy space is to turn the reading environment into something more relaxing and comfortable.

How do we do that? Start by grabbing your favourite soft blanket, lighting a candle or putting on some warm lighting (a lamp works perfectly for this). Next, you want to set the mood with a playlist. This helps to immerse yourself into the reading atmosphere or even set the atmosphere for the book you are reading. I have friends who play fantasy-type music to help build the vision of the author while they read.

My personal favourite is a cozy coffee shop playlist playing softly while I read. It instantly makes the experience feel more relaxing. You can find it on Spotify here.

Snacks & Beverages

For me, the reading session is complete without my favourite beverage and snacks. I will make my favourite latte or tea to enjoy alongside my book. Snacks need to be easy to munch on, like pretzels, but without any residue so as not to ruin your books.

Not only that, but when I am getting out of a reading slump, I make sure I don’t force myself to read anything super lengthy. I read whatever grabs my interest most.

Overall, bookish self-care is simple. It’s a way to slow down and make the act of reading feel special again. So grab your next read, cozy up and remember reading is supposed to be fun.

As someone who often gets caught up in a busy schedule, I sometimes forget that reading is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable. There’s nothing better than curling up with a cozy blanket, a cup of tea, and a good book at the end of the day. Thanks for the reminder to slow down and make reading feel special again!

I really enjoyed reading this post. As a filmmaker, I spend a lot of time thinking about how environments and atmospheres can influence emotions, so I found your discussion about creating a cozy reading space particularly interesting. I also agree that it’s important not to force yourself through lengthy books when trying to get out of a reading slump. Sometimes reconnecting with a hobby starts with making the experience enjoyable again. Thanks for sharing these thoughtful tips!

You’re so right…having the right snack and beverage really sets the vibe for getting into a reading nook. My go-to is biscotti with coffee or tea, depending on the time of day 🙂
